Our first few days have been nothing short of fantastic. As soon as we arrived at Mellow Yellow we knew we had made the right choice. 10 days here is going to set us up perfectly and it´s a kick in the arse from the beach so you can´t ask for better.

First up we had to go to the beach, it´s only natural after all. So a quick change and 10 mins later we are standing on Copacabana outside the world famous hotel. The sun is blazing hot, a far cry from Scotland a few days earlier. It´s a much much bigger beach than I had ever imagined. We walked up it for a good 90 odd mins taking in all before us. I think we were both in love with it instantly. The locals say God created the earth in 7 days, and on the 8th he created Rio. They might well be right.

We´ve met some nice people in the last few days too, but as you can imagine people are constantly coming and going in hostels so it´s quite hard to build up decent friendships early on.

The hostel seems to provide the best value tours around so we´ve booked a few up already. One day in and we visited the Maracana for Fluminense vs Atletico. It was a crying shame that he crowd was just under 20k but we got in amongst the drummers in the home section and that was an experience in itself. The match finished 1-1. Some silky stuff at times but the finishing would have made Darren Mackie blush.

We must have walked about 30 odd miles now checking out the city and it´s beaches, gardens and museums. The sun is beating down and all is well so far. Also noticed that the Cow´s that amused us in Edinburgh last summer are now in Rio so every now and again you find one hugging a street corner, 137 in total I think there are.

We´re off to Sugar Loaf and Cristo in the next few days, both of which look magical, and then there is the possibility of Flamengo vs Corinthians on Wednesday night. Mind you, the highlight on the horizon has to be the beach world cup which starts on Friday morning around the corner from here. 5am and into a queue for me so I can see Brazil vs Mexico, and it´s all free. Ideal for a penny pinching traveling Scotsman!

in Rio

overcast 27 °C

Just a very quick note to let you guys know we arrived safely in Rio today. Only a few hours behind schedule and no problems. Weather is fantastic and hostel seems good so far. Will write more later.

Friday was quite a day. The flight from Atlanta was a long one, or it felt that way anyway. So close to Rio now. Anyhow, we arrived a few hours later than expected but the taxi driver knew of the delay and still turned up to collect us. We spent the next hour in his taxi driving through the various fravela´s of Rio. It really was quite sad to see how some lived and little words were exchanged.

The driver tried to educate us on various aspects of the city which gave us a little insight of what lay ahead.

The motorway into town was something else. Apparently 200,000 die on the roads each year. Hardly a surprising stat when you see the guys walking up and down the middle of the road flagging cars down to sell them candy!!

Preparing to Leave

almost there .....

overcast 12 °C

Well it's only 6 weeks till we leave 'sunny' Scotland to head off into the unknown world that is South America. It seems like an age that it's been at the planning stage and now it's getting closer it feels kinda strange. Packing the flat contents up and renting it out is becoming somewhat of a chore but hey ho, it pays the bills, and that's what counts. Until we get to Brazil we'll just have to be content with reading up on the various places we plan to visit. First up, the holy grail of football, the Maracana. Now where's that fixture list .....
